In Michigan, there is a range of public funding from school to school. There are both historical and political reasons for disparities found across the state.
Let’s set the record straight! While school leadership teams strive to improve on educational outcomes for the students they serve, there is no lack of brilliance and passion towards the development of ideas. There is not a lack of clarity as to the importance of big picture outcomes school leadership teams work towards. And, there is certainly no lack of options for researched and proven solutions to common challenges.
So why does a gap still exist between vision and reality? Why aren’t student achievement goals reaching the heights great leadership envisions?
It's that time of year again! It's time to take on the challenge of stretching every dollar you have in your budget to the unimaginable limit. It's time to become a mad scientist as you hypothesize and predict revenue. To me, the budgeting process in a school is a bit of a thrill ride. It's an invigorating challenge in making it all work, yet there is always this known risk that exists despite how many safety checks you do.
As you start your budgeting this year, I challenge you to crank up the thrill another notch and engage in a zero-based budgeting process. Zero-based budgeting starts with no history in mind. It's a budget that is built only on the expenses absolutely identified as critical for meeting outcomes. And, most uniquely, the entire team builds it, leading to greater understanding, buy-in and commitment to using resources to their greatest potential.
As you consider taking this challenge, here are a few positive outcomes to help convince you to stop watching and start riding!
